SIGHTS OF EGYPT

I remember it clearly, the first print out I got from the internet. As I stared down at these colourful pages packed with adventure, I never imagined walking in those steps myself. You see, when my dad told me about the 7 wonders of the ancient world, I was genuinely intrigued and fascinated by this mysterious world I was part of. That was the first sign of my pending love for travel.

I read through those prints religiously and would often day dream about a walk through the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. And what the watchmen at Lighthouse of Alexandria saw. Did the great Pharaoh Khufu stand at that lighthouse before heading to his resting place in the Pyramid at Giza? How grand was the Statue of Zeus at Olympia; and was Alexander the Great really born the same night the Temple of Atermis at Ephesus was burned down? How fancy was the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. And is the Statue of Liberty anything like the Colossus at Rhodes?

In those quiet moments, I decided I had to see what was left of these wonders. I was about 11 years old and this was my new life mission. Funny how the things you truly love always surface early in life and God doesn’t miss a thing. Fast forward to my early twenties and he made that dream come true. I found myself in Egypt, home to the only remaining wonder of the ancient world – The Pyramid at Giza. It wasn’t a day dream anymore, I was here and the grandeur of human genius was mine for the taking. Enjoy Egypt through my eyes:

Was it the strength of the sand?

Or the secrets that lay in it?

Did the wind carry the voice of the gods?

And did the sun see something we shouldn’t?

And what about the moon, what secrets burden you?

I’m I century too late to find out?

• The Great Pyramid at Giza. Khafre’s Pyramid complex is undoubtedly top of the list.

• Head down to Khafre’s Valley Temple and meet the Sphinx at Giza

• The Pharaonic village. Sail down the canals at the historic park and experience life in ancient Egypt.

• The Bibliotheca Alexandrina. This modern library and cultural center, was built to commemorate the original Library of Alexandria.

• Qaitbey Citadel stands at the exact site as the Lighthouse of Alexandria. It was built with stones from the ruins of the lighthouse.

• Drive along the sea and enjoy the calm of water and wind.

• Drive through the streets and chase the four legged “motorist”.
